My Freshman Year -
This whole chapter is exploring what the ideas of community and diversity really mean in a college culture. As a little bit of an outsider and newcomer to this subject, I was interested to see that she mentions “The American Way” when talking about individualism in community. What does it mean the American way? I guess America has their own standard for community and individualism, I wonder how it differs from other countries or cultures. One of the issues she talks about in this chapter is campus diversity. I also found it interesting that she used a study of who sits together at meals to measure diversity. It is probably the easiest way to see, however it does not mean that the pattern of who eats with who is always the same throughout the whole day concerning diversity. I might eat with those all the same ethnicity of me, but then leave there and go hangout with people all different then me, so it’s obviously not the only way to tell diversity in a school, but I’m not disagreeing with what she said. This is an important issue though, and I think Bloomsburg University as a whole could benefit greatly by learning about how to better by diverse and be welcoming to minorities on campus.

The Mind At Work –
“I was particularly curious about the thinking involved in doing a waitress’s work well.” This sentence caught my attention. All too often I think of a waitress as a low level job that should be avoided by people. I think this is because many waitresses that I have come across don’t try to do a good job. Usually a waitress serving me does not care about my experience at all, and is sometimes rude and slow – not being thoughtful. This is a skewed view and shouldn’t be the normal expectation. I should try to look at a job like a waitress as somebody who has some knowledge of business, has great memory, and a good sense of time and knows when to hurry the chefs etc. You have to be very engaged in the world and aware of your surroundings to be a good waitress. The quote says “doing a waitress’s work well” and the word “well” is what stands out to me the most. This woman doesn’t want to waitress just to get enough money to pay the bills, but she wants to do a good job. I think this is a rarity in our generation, and I believe that a good work ethic and a striving to do whatever you’re doing as well as you can would help our culture a lot. He also describes how much thought goes into waitressing, and it was crazy to think about it that way! So much planned action and little details that I would have never expected to be a part of a waitress’s thought process. Overall it was eye opening to read and gave me more respect for those who put effort into what they do as a career.
